Global markets reacted to a major Binance hack, oil price gains and mixed earnings, while the Fed’s hawkish stance kept gold under pressure.

The evening session saw risk sentiment wobble after a $6.3 billion hack at Binance, which knocked crypto assets down 2.2 % but the dip faded quickly. Meanwhile, oil kept climbing on geopolitical tension, and equities showed a mixed picture as energy giants beat forecasts while tech CEOs echoed political rhetoric. The U.S. dollar stayed firm after the Federal Reserve signalled further tightening, keeping gold below the $4,000 level.

Currencies and central banks

The Japanese yen remained range‑bound near 157.30 USD after the Bank of Japan left rates unchanged but hinted at continued tightening. The euro zone’s Q3 growth slowed to 0.4 %, reflecting lingering weakness in France, yet the euro held steady against the dollar. Overall, the dollar’s strength was underpinned by the Fed’s hawkish outlook, limiting upside for other major currencies.

Gold and commodities

Gold slipped below $4,000, trading around $3,965 in Asian hours, as investors priced in higher Fed rate expectations. Crude oil continued its rally, posting a fourth consecutive monthly gain after a tanker attack near the Strait of Hormuz highlighted supply risks. The market also noted emergency releases from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which tempered a sharper pull‑back.

Crypto

The Binance breach dominated crypto headlines. Analysts noted that the stolen 18,270 BTC now exceeds Coinbase’s corporate treasury, while the hackers also hold over 500,000 ETH. The market quickly recovered, with Bitcoin holding above its 200‑day moving average near $73.3 K despite a brief dip below $76.5 K. UK regulators are monitoring the fallout, attributing the attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor unit.

Stocks

Energy stocks led the gains as Chevron and Exxon posted stronger‑than‑expected earnings on soaring diesel prices, driven by refinery disruptions in Ukraine and the Middle East. On the tech side, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg echoed President Trump’s “super intelligence” phrasing during earnings calls, a rare political crossover that drew market chatter. Wall Street also braced for a potential Democratic swing in the upcoming midterm elections.
